A visit to India can quickly become a crowded list of family commitments, property checks, banking work, medical appointments and government follow-ups. The answer is not to schedule every hour. It is to identify what must be completed in person, prepare the documents before travel and leave realistic buffers.
1. Confirm your travel documents early
Check the passport, visa or OCI document appropriate to each traveller, including children. Names on tickets should match the travel document. Review transit-country and airline requirements directly with the relevant authorities and carrier. Passport Seva advises Indian citizens travelling abroad to maintain passport validity and blank pages; renewal should not be left until the last week.
An OCI cardholder is a foreign national. The official OCI FAQs state that the passport is the primary travel document and must remain valid during the stay in India. Before booking, check whether passport details or personal particulars require an OCI update through the official portal.
2. Build one secure travel file
Keep encrypted digital copies of passports, OCI or visa documents, tickets, accommodation, insurance, prescriptions and essential India-side contacts. Carry only originals that are genuinely required. Store backup copies separately from the originals, and give one trusted person access to the minimum information needed if a document is lost.
3. Review customs before packing
Do not rely on an old allowance shared in a family group. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs published updated international-traveller guidance and Baggage Rules in 2026 covering accompanied baggage, declarations, currency, jewellery and other categories. If carrying high-value goods, professional equipment, pets, significant currency or items intended for others, check the current rule and declaration route before departure. When unsure, use the Red Channel and ask Customs.
4. Plan health and medicines
Schedule routine reviews before the trip where appropriate. Carry medicines in labelled packaging with prescriptions and any clinician letter needed for controlled, injectable or refrigerated items. Confirm storage during flights and ground travel. Arrange travel insurance suitable for the travellers and activities, and save the insurer’s assistance process—not only the policy number.
5. Pre-book work that needs your presence
For bank, property, legal, medical or government visits, confirm the office, appointment, accepted documents, originals, copies, photographs, witnesses, fees and authorised payment method. Ask for written confirmation. Put critical appointments near the middle of the trip so a cancellation or missing document does not affect the return flight.
6. Group the itinerary by location
Cluster meetings in the same part of a city and allow for traffic, security checks and waiting time. Reconfirm the day before. Avoid arranging an intercity journey and an essential appointment on the same day. Keep the first day lighter after a long-haul flight, especially for older travellers or young children.
7. Prepare connectivity and payments
Activate international roaming or confirm the identification required for local mobile service. Check whether your overseas bank will send OTPs in India, notify card issuers if needed and keep two independent payment methods. Use traceable payments for official or professional work and retain receipts. Never share OTPs, PINs or full identity documents with an unknown helper.
8. Close every task before departure
For each appointment, record what was submitted, the acknowledgement number, amount paid, next action, responsible person and expected follow-up route. Scan receipts and stamped papers promptly. Return borrowed keys, review any authority granted and leave a written handover for matters that will continue after you travel.
NRI Solutions 360’s NRI Concierge support may assist with agreed India-side appointment, transport and local coordination, subject to verification, location and scope. Travellers can send an enquiry with the city and required assistance.
